Resin Bound Driveways, Laid on a Base Built for Them

A resin driveway is a surface of natural stone aggregate held together by clear resin and laid over a prepared base. In a resin bound driveway, the stone and resin are mixed together before laying, so every stone is coated and the finished surface keeps tiny gaps between the stones, letting rainwater drain through it.

The result is a smooth, seamless finish with no loose stones to scatter and no joints to weed. It also means the finish is only ever as good as the base beneath it, because a seamless surface shows every movement underneath.

As resin driveway installers, Luna Maintenance Ltd lays resin bound driveways, paths and courtyards across West Cornwall, and we prepare every base ourselves before the first mix goes down.

The Resin Bound Work We Carry Out

New resin bound driveways

The complete construction: the old surface broken out, the ground dug to depth, a sub-base and a stable base built and compacted, then the resin bound surface laid over it.

Resin over an existing surface

Where your existing tarmac is sound and suitable, resin can be laid over it, saving the cost of a full new base. We check the surface carefully at the site visit before recommending it.

Resin paths and garden walkways

Paths that link a driveway to the front door, the garden or a side gate, laid in the same blend for one continuous look.

Courtyards and shared spaces

Resin bound courtyards and outdoor seating areas, where a smooth, level and free-draining surface matters.

Edging, falls and finishing details

Edging set so the resin finishes cleanly against walls, lawns and paving, with falls that carry water off the surface where the base needs them.

Choosing your stone blend

Resin bound surfaces come in a wide range of natural stone colours and blends. We talk through the options at the site visit, so the finish suits the stone, render or brick of your home.

Our Resin Driveway Work

Our recent resin work includes a 55 square metre resin-bound driveway transformation, a curved resin path between granite walls, and a resin-bound courtyard laid for outdoor seating. Every photograph on this site is our own team on our own work.

What a Resin Bound Driveway Gives Your Home

Rainwater that drains straight throughA porous resin bound surface over a permeable base lets water soak away instead of pooling on the drive or running towards the road.

A smooth surface that stays tidyWith no loose stones and no joints, there is nothing to rake back, scatter onto the lawn or weed out between the blocks.

A finish that lifts the look of your homeThe stone blend is chosen to complement your house, giving the front of the property a clean, finished look.

A surface built on the right foundationBecause we prepare the base ourselves, the resin is laid on ground dug, compacted and finished to support it.

How a Resin Driveway Is Installed, Step by Step

Every resin driveway we lay follows five steps:

1

Get in touch.

Call 07460 077745 or send the form with an outline of the drive, path or courtyard you have in mind.

2

Free site visit.

We assess the existing surface, the levels, the drainage and the access, and talk through stone blends with you.

3

Written quote.

The base, the resin system, the blend, the area and the price, set out in writing before any work starts.

4

Prepare the base.

The ground is dug out and compacted with our own machinery, or the existing surface is cleaned and prepared where it is suitable.

5

Mix, lay and finish.

Resin and stone are mixed on site, trowelled to an even finish, and left to cure before we hand the drive over.

Why Choose Luna Maintenance for Your Resin Driveway

Resin bound surfacing works with the planning rules, not against them. In England, a new or replacement front driveway over 5 square metres needs planning permission unless it is permeable or drains to a border or soakaway. A resin bound surface is porous, but the driveway only drains through if the base beneath it lets water pass too, so we plan the base and the drainage together.

Rhino resin trained. Our team is trained in resin bound installation, from mixing to the final trowel finish.

The base is ours. Our own machinery digs out and compacts every base, so the resin goes down on ground we have prepared.

An exceptional finish. Every edge, joint and transition is considered, down to the smallest detail.

Accredited and insured. CHAS accredited, a Constructionline Gold member and fully insured.

What Your Resin Driveway Quote Covers

Every resin driveway is priced after a free site visit, because the base and the area decide most of the work. Your written quote sets out:

the area to be surfaced and the stone blend chosen
whether a new base is needed, or the existing surface is sound enough to overlay
breaking out the old drive, with muck away arranged as part of the job
edging, falls and drainage
access for our machinery and anything about the site that affects the work

Resin Driveway Questions

What is the difference between resin bound and resin bonded?
Resin bound mixes the stone into the resin before it is laid, giving a smooth, porous surface that water drains through. Resin bonded scatters loose stone onto a coat of resin, giving a textured finish that is not permeable. The two look and behave differently. We lay resin bound surfaces, chosen for their smooth finish and their drainage.
How long does a resin driveway last?
The life of a resin driveway depends mostly on the base beneath it, the resin system and stone mix used, the traffic it carries and how it is looked after. A resin bound surface laid on a sound, well-compacted base and cared for sensibly stays in good condition for many years. We assess the base and the use at the site visit.
Can resin go over my existing tarmac?
Yes, if the existing tarmac is sound and suitable. Resin bound needs a stable base with no cracking, sinking or loose areas, and the falls and drainage have to work. We check your existing surface carefully at the site visit. Where it is suitable, overlaying avoids a full new base; where it is not, we recommend a new one.
Is resin bound permeable?
Yes. Because the stones are coated and bound with small gaps between them, a resin bound surface lets water drain through. For the whole driveway to be permeable, the base beneath it has to let water pass too, which is why we plan the base and the surface together. A permeable drive helps with the planning rules for front gardens.
What affects resin driveway cost?
The main factors are the area, whether a new base is needed or the existing surface can be overlaid, breaking out the old drive, the depth of excavation, the edging and drainage, the stone blend and access to the site. Every resin driveway is priced individually after a free site visit, with a written quote before work begins.
Are you trained resin installers?
Yes. Our team is Rhino resin trained for resin bound installation, covering the mixing, laying and finishing of the surface. Alongside that training, we prepare every base ourselves with our own machinery, so one team is responsible for the resin and the ground beneath it. Luna Maintenance Ltd is also CHAS accredited and a Constructionline Gold member.
How do I look after a resin driveway?
Sweep the surface regularly to clear leaves, soil and debris, and wash it down occasionally with a hose or a pressure washer on a gentle setting. Deal with oil spills promptly, and avoid scraping heavy metal objects across the surface. Simple, regular care keeps a resin bound drive looking clean and draining freely.
