Wood Chipper Hire for Hedge, Tree and Site Clearance

Wood chipper hire is the short-term hire of a machine that feeds cut branches, brash and small timber past a set of rotating knives and turns them into wood chips. It reduces a mountain of cuttings to a fraction of its size, right where the work is.

It suits landowners and farms clearing boundaries, homeowners taking on an overgrown garden, and builders clearing a plot before groundworks begin. The chips that come out are a usable material for mulch, paths and ground cover.

Chipper hire from Luna Maintenance Ltd comes either operated, with one of our team feeding and running the machine, or self-drive for you to run yourself. Tell us what you are clearing and we will match the machine and the arrangement to it.

The Clearance Work Our Chipper Takes On

Brash and cuttings from hedges and boundaries

Chip the cuttings from boundary and hedgerow work as you go, rather than leaving them in windrows to rot or burn.

Felled trees and branches

Once a tree is down, the chipper deals with the tops, limbs and brash, leaving any timber worth keeping to one side.

Storm-damage clean-up

After a storm, the chipper turns fallen limbs and broken branches into chips, so a yard, garden or access track is clear again sooner.

Overgrown gardens and plots

Scrub, overgrown shrubs and years of growth reduced on site, ready for the garden or plot to be put back to use.

Site clearance before groundworks

Clearing vegetation from a building plot or a field entrance before the excavation starts, so the ground is ready for the machines.

Woodland and farm boundaries

Tidying and boundary work on farms and estates, with the chips kept on site for paths and ground cover.

When the clearance is bigger than the chipper

For trees that need felling with machinery, our 14-tonne excavator and tree shear take on the whole job through tree removal and land clearance.

Our Chipper at Work

Our chipper works alongside the excavator and tree shear on our own clearance jobs across West Cornwall, from storm-damaged trees to overgrown ground and woodland edges. The photographs on this site show our own machines on our own work.

What Chipper Hire Gives You

Waste turned into something usefulBranches and brash become wood chips you can spread as mulch, lay on paths or use as ground cover, so the clearance produces a material instead of a disposal problem.

A cleared site, soonerChipping as you cut keeps the work area clear and safe to move around, and stops the job grinding to a halt behind a growing heap of cuttings.

The right machine for what you are clearingTell us the material and the volume, and we match the hire to the work rather than leaving you to guess.

Run it yourself, or have it run for youSelf-drive suits a confident hirer. Operated hire puts one of our team on the machine, so you can get on with the rest of the job.

How Chipper Hire Works, Step by Step

Hiring our chipper takes five steps:

1

Tell us what you are clearing.

Call 07460 077745 or send the form with the type of material, roughly how much there is, and where the site is.

2

Match the machine.

We confirm the chipper suits the work, and whether you want it operated or self-drive.

3

Agree it in writing.

Your written quote sets out the hire period, delivery or collection and, for operated hire, the operator.

4

Collect or take delivery.

Collect the chipper on a suitable trailer, or we deliver it as close to the clearance as the access allows.

5

Clear, chip and return.

The material is chipped, the chips stay with you or are dealt with as agreed, and the chipper comes back to us at the end of the hire.

Why Choose Luna Maintenance for Chipper Hire

Timing matters with any hedge or tree work. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it an offence to damage or destroy the nest of a wild bird while it is in use or being built, which is why clearance is best planned outside the main nesting season of March to August.

A clearance contractor's machine. Our chipper works on our own clearance jobs alongside the excavator and tree shear, so the advice you get comes from people who use it.

Chainsaw certified team. Operated hire comes with people trained for clearance work, not just for the machine.

Accredited and insured. CHAS accredited, a Constructionline Gold member and fully insured.

Hours that suit the work. We are available from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, so the hire fits around your own working week.

Your Contractor: Ross Kitto

Luna Maintenance is led by director Ross Kitto, who has 29 years in the trade. He formed the company in 2023, and today a close team of five carries out clearance, groundworks and plant hire across West Cornwall.

The team is chainsaw certified and CPCS-carded on plant, and the same people who clear storm damage with our own machines run the chipper on operated hire.

“Tell us what you are clearing and we will match the machine to it, because putting the customer first starts with the right equipment for the job,”

says Ross Kitto, director of Luna Maintenance Ltd.

What Your Chipper Hire Quote Covers

We do not publish hire rates, because the price depends on the work, the period and how the chipper reaches your site. Every hire is quoted in writing, and the quote sets out:

operated or self-drive, and the operator where you want one
the hire period your clearance needs
delivery to site, or collection on your own suitable trailer
what happens to the chips, whether they stay with you or removal is arranged as part of the job
anything about the site that affects the hire, such as access or ground conditions

Tell us what you are clearing and we will match the hire to it.

Chipper Hire Questions

What can the chipper take?
It depends on the material: hedge brash, branches, tops from a felled tree and general cuttings each behave differently in a chipper. Tell us what you are clearing and roughly how much of it there is, and we will match the machine to the work. Larger timber from a felling job is better handled as part of a machine clearance with our excavator and tree shear.
Can I tow it myself?
Yes, if you have the right set-up. You can collect the chipper yourself on a suitable trailer with a vehicle rated to tow it, and we will talk through what that means for your vehicle when you book. If you would rather not, we deliver the chipper to your site and pick it up again at the end of the hire.
Can you supply an operator?
Yes. Our chipper hire comes operated or self-drive. With operated hire, one of our chainsaw certified team runs and feeds the machine, which suits larger clearances and anyone who would rather not handle the work themselves. Self-drive suits hirers who are confident running a chipper. Tell us about the job and we will recommend the arrangement that fits.
What happens to the chippings?
They are yours to keep. Wood chips make a useful mulch for borders and beds, a soft surface for woodland and garden paths, and ground cover around trees and hedges. If you have more than you can use, tell us when you book and we can arrange removal as part of the job, so the site is left clear when the hire ends.
When is the best time for hedge and tree clearance?
Autumn and winter are the natural window. The law protects active birds' nests, and the main nesting season runs from March to August, so larger hedge and tree clearance is best planned for the colder months. Growth has slowed by then, the leaves are down and the work is easier to see. Tell us your plans early and we will fit the hire around them.
Can you do the clearance as well?
Yes. If you would rather have the whole clearance handled for you, our team takes it on as a complete job through our tree removal and land clearance service, using the 14-tonne excavator, tree shear and chipper together. It suits overgrown plots, storm damage and clearance ahead of groundworks, and it is priced as one job with a free site visit.

Ready to Clear the Ground?

Tell us what you are clearing, how much there is and where the site is, and we will match the chipper and the arrangement to the job. Your written quote is free.
