Specialist Groundworks and Farm Work on The Lizard

Groundworks on The Lizard: arenas, farm buildings, tracks, yards and driveways across the peninsula, planned around serpentine rock, exposed fields and lanes barely wider than a tractor. We start every project by reading the ground, then carry it through to the finished surface.

Groundworks on The Lizard: Serpentine Rock and Working Farms

The Lizard has ground of its own below the topsoil. Much of the peninsula sits on serpentine, a dense rock that can lie just under the grass across Goonhilly Downs and come up in hard, broken bands once the bucket bites. Where the soil is thin, rainwater sits on the heath, so drainage is designed before any base goes down.

We reach the peninsula down the A3083, past RNAS Culdrose, and from there the lanes tighten towards Mullion, Ruan Minor, Cadgwith and Coverack. Around St Keverne the land opens out into livestock farms, and much of the coastline lies within the Cornwall National Landscape, where planning officers look closely at new buildings, tracks and hard surfacing.

Work on The Lizard follows the land. Farm tracks, cattle shed bases and yards make up much of it, alongside ménages for equestrian yards, and driveways and patios for homes from Lizard village to Mullion. Each project begins with a site visit to see what the rock and the water are doing on your plot.

Our Groundworks and Plant Hire Services on The Lizard

Agricultural and Equestrian Groundworks

Farm and equestrian. The peninsula's farms and yards lead this group: agricultural groundworks, farm track construction, agricultural buildings, horse arena construction, silage clamps and slurry stores and farm concrete yards. Each is set out in more detail below.

Plant Hire

Plant hire. Plant hire is available with one of our operators or self-drive, and the 14-tonne excavator carries breakers for the harder serpentine digs. Mini digger hire suits the cove villages, where access is tight, and chipper hire follows hedge and scrub clearance along field boundaries.

Groundworks and Drainage

Groundworks and drainage. Groundworks and concrete works begin with what the rock allows. Drainage on wet heath often means a soakaway or a septic tank for a rural property, tree removal and land clearance reclaims scrub-covered ground, and setting out fixes the levels before footings are dug.

Driveways and Landscaping

Driveways and landscaping. Driveways in resin, tarmac or concrete for homes that face the salt wind, hard landscaping and patios laid to shed heavy rain, retaining walls where a garden steps down towards the sea, and fencing for paddocks and field edges.

Why The Lizard Chooses Luna Maintenance

The right machine for serpentineHard rock calls for weight and breakers, and a cove cottage calls for a 2-tonne mini. Our fleet covers both, and every machine on your project is ours.

Our Farm and Groundworks Projects

Our portfolio covers the work this peninsula calls for: drained horse arenas finished with timber rails, steel-frame sheds on fresh concrete bases, farm tracks, and tree clearance with the 14-tonne excavator and tree shear. Each one was built by our own crew.

Questions About Working on The Lizard

Do you work on The Lizard?
Yes. We take on groundworks, farm and equestrian projects and driveways across the whole peninsula, including Mullion, Ruan Minor, Cadgwith, Coverack, St Keverne and Lizard village. The Lizard sits towards the far edge of our area, so the larger farm, arena and groundworks projects are the heart of our work there. Call us to talk through what you have in mind.
Can you dig in serpentine rock?
Yes. Serpentine can be hard and fractured, and it often lies close to the surface. Where the rock demands it we bring the 14-tonne excavator with breakers, and we check the ground at the site visit so the dig, the foundation depth and the drainage are planned around what is really there. Foundation depth follows Building Regulations Approved Document A.
Do you take on farm and equestrian work on The Lizard?
Yes, it is a large part of what we do there. On Lizard farms that means arenas and stable bases, groundworks and frame erection for agricultural buildings, farm tracks, concrete yards, and silage clamps and slurry stores. We work 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, so the project can be planned round your livestock and the farming calendar.
Will your machines fit down narrow Lizard lanes?
Our fleet runs from two 2-tonne mini diggers for cove cottages and tight gardens up to the 14-tonne excavator for farm projects with open access. At the site visit we look at the lanes, gateways and turning space, then match the machine to the route in and to the work itself, so the project runs smoothly from the first day.
