Silage Clamps and Slurry Stores Built to an Exceptional Standard

Silage clamp and slurry store construction is the building of the concrete structures a livestock farm uses to make and keep silage and to hold slurry until it can be used on the land. Both are regulated, because silage effluent and slurry are among the most polluting materials on a farm if they escape.

That makes the groundwork underneath them critical: the excavation, the base, the falls and the effluent drainage all have to be right before a clamp is filled or a store takes its first slurry.

Luna Maintenance Ltd builds silage clamps and slurry stores across West Cornwall, as part of the agricultural groundworks we deliver for livestock and mixed farms.

The Silage and Slurry Work We Build

New silage clamps

Clamps with a concrete floor laid to fall, walls to contain and support the silage, and channels that carry effluent to collection. The wall system is agreed with you at the site visit to suit your clamp and your machinery.

Replacement clamp floors

Worn and pitted clamp floors broken out with the excavator breakers and relaid, so effluent runs where it should and the clamp can be cleaned out cleanly.

Effluent collection

The channels, drains and collection that the regulations require, keeping silage effluent contained and away from clean water and watercourses.

Slurry stores

Some farmers know it as a slurry lagoon. The structure we build is the slurry store, from the excavation and the base up, sized and sited with you to suit your herd and your system.

Aprons, yards and dirty water links

The concrete apron at the face of the clamp and the yard links that carry dirty water to the store, laid with our farm concrete yards work.

Bases for silage sheds

Concrete bases for covered silage storage and the buildings beside the clamp, with the frame erected through our agricultural buildings work.

Our Silage and Farm Concrete Work

Our farm concrete work includes silage-shed bases and building pads poured by our own team, alongside the clamps, stores and yards a working livestock farm relies on. Every job on this page was carried out by Ross and the team.

What a Well-Built Clamp or Store Gives You

Compliance from the first day of useA clamp or store built to the regulations, with the notice to the Environment Agency in hand, lets you fill it with confidence.

Better silage, less wasteA level, sound floor and firm walls let the clamp be rolled and sheeted tightly, cutting the air pockets that spoil feed.

Effluent and slurry kept where they belongSealed floors, the right falls and contained channels protect your land, your watercourses and your neighbours from pollution.

A structure built to lastConcrete specified for the acids in silage effluent and slurry, laid on a compacted base, stands up to years of filling, emptying and cleaning out.

How We Build Your Silage Clamp or Slurry Store

1

Walk the site with us.

We visit free of charge to look at the ground, the siting, the access for machinery and how the clamp or store links to your yard and drainage.

2

Agree the plan in writing.

Your written quote sets out the size, the specification and the price, and we talk through prior approval and the timing of your Environment Agency notice.

3

Excavate and drain.

We strip, excavate and lay the effluent and dirty water drainage while the ground is open.

4

Build the structure.

The base is compacted and the concrete floor poured to its falls, with the walls or store built to the agreed design.

5

Cure, check and hand over.

The concrete is left to cure before it takes any load, the channels are checked, and we walk the finished work with you.

Why Farms Choose Luna Maintenance for Clamps and Stores

Clamps and stores are among the most tightly regulated structures on a farm. Under the Water Resources (Control of Pollution) (Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil) (England) Regulations 2010, a new or substantially altered silage clamp or slurry store must be built to the standards the regulations set, and the Environment Agency must be notified at least 14 days before it is first used. The reference standard for the design is BS 5502.

Built to the regulations. We plan every clamp and store round those requirements from the first site visit.

Groundworks specialists. Excavation, bases, falls and drainage are the core of what we do.

Accredited for the serious work. CHAS accredited and a Constructionline Gold member.

What Your Clamp or Store Quote Covers

Every clamp and store is priced from a site visit. Your written quote sets out:

the size and capacity of the clamp or store
the depth of excavation and the ground we expect to find
the base build-up and the concrete specified for the load and for effluent
the walls, the floor falls and the effluent channels
the aprons, yard links and dirty water drainage around it
any old concrete to break out, and whether muck away is arranged as part of the job
the conditions that would change the price, such as rock, springs or soft ground

Anything found once the ground is open is agreed with you in writing first.

Silage Clamp and Slurry Store Questions

What is a silage clamp?
A silage clamp is a concrete bunker, usually walled on three sides, where grass or maize is tipped, spread, rolled and sheeted so it ferments into silage for winter feed. The floor slopes to channels that collect the effluent the crop releases. A clamp has to be strong enough for the weight of the crop and the machinery working on it, and sealed so effluent cannot escape.
Do you need planning permission for a silage clamp?
Often not full planning permission. Under the General Permitted Development Order 2015, Schedule 2 Part 6, many silage clamps and slurry stores on units of 5 hectares or more are permitted development, subject to asking the council whether its prior approval is needed. Smaller holdings and some locations work to different rules, and siting near homes can bring extra limits, so always check with Cornwall Council first.
What regulations apply to silage clamps and slurry stores?
The main rules are the Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil Regulations 2010, known as SSAFO. New or substantially altered clamps and stores must be built to the standards they set, and the Environment Agency must be notified at least 14 days before first use. BS 5502 is the reference standard for the design. Planning rules apply alongside, so check with Cornwall Council too.
Do you build slurry stores?
Yes. We build slurry stores for livestock farms across West Cornwall, from the excavation and the base up, sized and sited with you to suit your herd and the way your farm handles slurry. Every store is planned round the SSAFO regulations, with the yard links and dirty water drainage that feed it, so the whole system works together from the day it is first used.
How long before a new clamp can be used?
Two things decide it. The concrete needs time to cure and gain strength before it takes the weight of a crop and machinery, and the time depends on the mix and the weather. The Environment Agency must also be notified at least 14 days before the clamp is first used. We plan the build so both fit round your cutting dates, and set out the programme in your written quote.
What do you need from me before you start?
It helps to know the capacity you need, based on your herd and how much silage or slurry you expect to store, and where you would like the clamp or store to sit. You will also need to have checked the prior approval position with Cornwall Council and planned the Environment Agency notice. Any drawings, plans or previous correspondence are useful to share at the site visit.
Can you do the yard and drainage around the clamp?
Yes, and doing it as one job is usually the better way. We lay the apron at the clamp face, the yard that links it to the rest of the farm and the dirty water channels that carry effluent and run-off to the store. Planning the clamp, the yard and the drainage together means every fall and channel works with the next, with no gaps for effluent to escape.
