Agricultural Groundworks for the Working Farm

Agricultural groundworks is the excavation, drainage, sub-base and concrete work that every farm building, yard, track and store is built on. It covers the ground preparation for new sheds and barns, the yards and farm hardstanding around them, the tracks that link them, and the clamps, stores and drains that manage silage, slurry and rainwater.

On a working farm that ground has to carry heavy loads, take hard wear from stock and machinery, and keep clean and dirty water apart. The levels, falls and base build-up set at the start decide whether a yard stays dry and a track stays open through a Cornish winter.

Luna Maintenance Ltd delivers the complete agricultural groundworks package across West Cornwall, from a single building base to a full farmyard, for farmers, landowners and estates.

The Agricultural Groundworks We Deliver

Farm building groundworks and erection

Site preparation, the concrete pad and the erection of the steel frame for cattle sheds, livestock housing, machinery stores and general-purpose buildings, with the aprons and drainage around them. The full detail is on our agricultural buildings page.

Farm tracks

Graded stone laid over a separating layer, cambered and drained so it carries tractors, trailers and stock lorries in every season, whether it is a new route across the farm or the rebuild of a track that has worn out. See farm track construction.

Concrete yards and farm hardstanding

Agricultural concrete for collecting yards, feed areas, building aprons and machinery standing, laid to falls and finished for grip. See farm concrete yards.

Silage clamps and slurry stores

Clamp floors, walls and stores built to the silage and slurry regulations, with the effluent drainage they need and the concrete apron that serves them. See silage clamps and slurry stores.

Farm drainage

Land drainage for wet fields, springs and gateways, yard run-off channels, roof water taken to a soakaway, and the separation of clean and dirty water so only what needs storing reaches the store.

Clearance and machine work

Scrub and hedge-line clearance, breaking out old concrete with the excavator breakers, and carting stone and spoil with the Valtra tractor and dump trailer. We can arrange muck away as part of the job.

Agricultural and Equestrian Groundworks Services

Our lead line of work, built for the way a working farm or yard operates.

What Well-Built Farm Groundworks Give You

A yard that stays clean and workableFalls carry rainwater off the concrete, and clean water is kept away from dirty, so less ends up in your store and the yard is safer underfoot for stock and staff.

Access in every seasonTracks, gateways and aprons built on a drained, compacted base stay open through a wet winter, so feed, stock and machinery keep moving when you need them to.

Buildings that go up square and levelA pad set out and levelled to the building it carries means the frame goes up true and the doors, gutters and floor all line up.

One plan for the whole farmWhen the same contractor designs the drainage, the base and the building together, each stage fits the next and the farm is disrupted once, not three times.

How an Agricultural Groundworks Project Runs

1

Walk the farm with us.

We visit free of charge to look at the ground, the access for machinery and stock, where the water runs and how the new work fits the farm.

2

Agree the plan in writing.

Your written quote sets out the work, the specification and the price, and flags where prior approval or Environment Agency notice applies, so the paperwork is in hand early.

3

Prepare the ground.

We strip, excavate and lay the drainage, working round your stock and your daily routine.

4

Build the base.

The sub-base is compacted in layers and the concrete poured to the falls, finished for the use it will see.

5

Complete and hand over.

The building is erected, the yard finished or the track topped, the site left tidy, and we walk the work with you before we leave.

Why Farms Choose Luna Maintenance for Agricultural Groundworks

Much of the work on a farm falls under agricultural permitted development. Under the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015, Schedule 2 Part 6, Class A, units of 5 hectares or more can carry out many buildings, excavations and engineering works needed for agriculture, often subject to prior approval from the council rather than a full planning application. We plan every job with that in mind and always advise you to confirm the position with Cornwall Council.

Planned round the farm. We work 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, so the job can fit round calving, silage and harvest.

The right machine for heavy work. Our own 14-tonne excavator with iDig machine control holds the levels, and the Valtra 250hp tractor and dump trailer moves the stone.

Accredited for the larger jobs. CHAS accredited and a Constructionline Gold member.

What Your Agricultural Groundworks Quote Covers

Every farm job is priced from a site visit, because the ground, the access and the drainage differ from one farm to the next. Your written quote sets out:

the area and depth of excavation, and the ground we expect to find
the drainage included, and where clean and dirty water will go
the sub-base build-up and the concrete specified for the load
any building erection, clamp or store work, and how it is sequenced
spoil, and whether muck away is arranged as part of the job
the conditions that would change the price, such as rock, buried services or wet ground

Anything found once the ground is open that changes the work is agreed with you in writing first.

Agricultural Groundworks Questions

What does agricultural groundworks include?
It includes the excavation, drainage, sub-base and concrete work behind every farm building, yard and track. On a typical farm that means building pads, collecting yards and farm hardstanding, stone tracks, silage clamp floors, slurry store bases and the land and yard drainage that serves them. We can take one element or plan the whole package together so each stage fits the next.
Can you do the drainage and the yard at the same time?
Yes, and it is usually the better way to work. Drainage runs, channels and soakaways go in while the ground is open, before the sub-base and concrete cover them. Planning the yard falls and the drainage together means rainwater and dirty water each go where they should from the day the concrete is finished, and the farm is disrupted only once.
Can you work around livestock and the farm calendar?
Yes. We work 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, which gives us room to fit the job round milking, calving, silage and harvest rather than the other way round. At the site visit we agree how stock will be moved or kept clear of the work area, which gateways stay open and when the noisier stages, such as breaking out, are best carried out.
Do you hire a tractor and dump trailer with a driver?
Yes. Our Valtra 250hp tractor and dump trailer is available with one of our own drivers, for carting stone, soil and spoil around the farm or between sites. It is the same machine we use on our own agricultural groundworks, so it is maintained to our standard and ready to go. Tell us what needs moving and where, and we will plan the work round it.
What farm work do you take on?
We build horse arenas and ménages, farm building groundworks with erection of the steel frame, farm tracks, concrete yards and farm hardstanding, silage clamps and slurry stores, and farm drainage. Alongside that we offer stock and post and rail fencing and operated or self-drive plant hire. If your project combines several of these, we can plan and price it as one job.
Do you cover farms outside the listed towns?
Yes. Most farms we work on sit between the towns rather than in them, anywhere from Land's End and The Lizard to Truro and Perranporth. For the right agricultural project we travel as far as Wadebridge. Call us with the farm's location and an outline of the work, and we will tell you whether it fits our area.
