Expert Retaining Walls for Sloping Ground in West Cornwall

Turn a slope into level, usable ground with a retaining wall built from the footing up. We dig the foundation, build the wall and put the drainage in behind it with our own machinery and team, so the wall holds the ground and lets the water out.

Retaining Walls Designed Around the Ground They Hold

A retaining wall is a wall built to hold back soil where the ground changes level, so that a slope can be turned into flat, usable space for a garden, a drive or a building.

A freestanding garden wall only has to carry itself. A retaining wall is under load all the time. The soil behind it pushes against it, and after heavy rain the water in that soil pushes harder still. That is why the parts you never see, the footing, the backfill and the drainage, decide whether a wall stands straight for years.

Luna Maintenance Ltd builds retaining walls across West Cornwall for homeowners, builders and farms. We excavate with our own machinery, build the footing and the wall, and install the drainage behind it, so one contractor takes care of the whole structure, from the dig to the finished face.

The Retaining Wall Work We Carry Out

Garden retaining walls and terracing

Walls that turn a sloping garden into level terraces for a patio, a seating area or a play space, set out with you so the levels work with the house and the rest of the garden.

Walls for driveways and parking

Where a drive or parking area is cut into a bank, a retaining wall holds the ground on the high side and keeps the drive clear, with the wall and the surface planned together.

Boundary and level-change walls

Walls along a boundary where your ground sits higher or lower than the land next door, built so the change in level is held securely.

Replacing a failing wall

Leaning, bulging or cracked walls taken down, the cause investigated and a new wall built with a footing and drainage designed for the ground. We can arrange muck away as part of the job.

Walls on farm and commercial sites

Retaining walls where a yard, a building platform or an access route has been cut into sloping ground, sized for the heavier loads that farm and commercial sites carry.

Excavation and drainage behind the wall

The dig for the footing, the free-draining backfill and the drainage that carries water out from behind the wall, all carried out by our own team. Where the water needs somewhere to go, our drainage work is part of the same job.

Retaining Walls Alongside Our Groundworks

Retaining walls sit naturally alongside the rest of our work: the excavation, drainage and concrete that every sound wall depends on, and the patios, drives and garden redesigns that a new level makes possible. You can see a selection of our recent groundworks and garden jobs on our work page.

What a Well-Built Retaining Wall Gives You

More usable groundA slope that was only good for looking at becomes a level terrace, a parking space or a building platform you can use every day.

A wall that stays uprightA footing matched to the ground and drainage that relieves the water pressure behind the wall keep it standing straight, rather than leaning or bulging over time.

Water managed, not trappedFree-draining backfill and outlets through or behind the wall let rainwater escape, so wet winters do not build up pressure against it.

A finish that suits the settingThe materials and the face of the wall are agreed with you, so it reads as part of the garden, the house or the farm rather than an afterthought.

How a Retaining Wall Job Works

1

Get in touch.

Call 07460 077745 or send the form with photos of the slope and a rough idea of the height and length of the wall.

2

Free site visit.

We look at the ground, the height to be retained, what sits above and below the wall, the access and where water runs.

3

Written quote.

The work, the specification and the price, set out in writing before anything starts, including any engineering input the wall needs.

4

Excavate and build the footing.

The ground is dug back safely, the footing formed and the drainage laid out.

5

Build, backfill and hand over.

The wall is built, backfilled with free-draining material as it rises, the ground finished above and below, and a walk-round with you before we leave.

Why Choose Luna Maintenance as Your Retaining Wall Contractors

A retaining wall starts with its footing, and the principles that Building Regulations Approved Document A (structure) sets out for foundations apply just as much here: the depth depends on the bearing ground, any nearby trees and the load. For a retaining wall, that load includes the soil behind it and whatever sits on top, such as a drive or a building. We look at all of it at the site visit.

Groundworks is our core trade. Excavation, footings and drainage are carried out by our own team on our own machinery.

From tight gardens to farm sites. Our 2-tonne mini diggers reach garden walls through narrow access, and our 14-tonne excavator handles the larger digs.

Accredited and insured. CHAS accredited, a Constructionline Gold member and fully insured.

Your Contractor: Ross Kitto

Ross Kitto leads Luna Maintenance and brings 29 years in the trade to every retaining wall we build. He formed the company in 2023 and leads a close team of five, with our plant operation CPCS-carded.

The team that assesses your slope is the team that digs it back and builds the wall, using our own excavators, dumper and whacker plate.

“A retaining wall is holding something back every day of its life, so we look at every detail of it, down to the smallest, especially the parts that end up out of sight,”

says Ross Kitto, director of Luna Maintenance Ltd.

What Your Retaining Wall Quote Covers

We do not publish prices, because every wall depends on the ground it holds back. The height, the length, what sits above the wall and the access for machinery all shape the cost. The site visit and the written quote are both free.

Your quote sets out:

the height, length and line of the wall
the excavation and the footing
the wall materials and the finished face
the backfill and the drainage behind the wall
removal of any old wall, with muck away arranged as part of the job
any engineering input, and access to the site

Everything we agree is in writing before work starts.

Retaining Wall Questions

What is a retaining wall?
You need a retaining wall wherever one level of ground has to sit higher than the next: a terraced garden, a drive cut into a bank, a boundary between two levels or a building platform on a slope. The wall resists the sideways push of the soil and water behind it, so it is built and drained quite differently from an ordinary garden wall.
Do I need planning permission or building control for a retaining wall?
It depends on the height of the wall, where it stands and what it holds back. A low garden retaining wall often needs no permission, but a taller wall, a wall beside a road or one supporting a drive, a building or neighbouring land may need approval. Check with Cornwall Council before work starts, and we will flag anything that needs checking at the site visit.
What can a retaining wall be built from?
Retaining walls can be built from a range of materials, including concrete block, stone-faced construction, timber sleepers and gabion baskets, each suited to different heights and settings. The right choice depends on the height, the load behind the wall and the look you want. We agree the materials with you at the site visit and set them out in your written quote.
How does a retaining wall drain?
Water must be able to escape from behind a retaining wall, or it builds up pressure against it. We backfill with free-draining material, lay drainage at the base to carry water away and, where the wall design allows, form weep holes through the face so water can pass. Directing that water to a suitable outlet is planned as part of the wall from the start.
When does a retaining wall need an engineer?
A wall needs engineering input when it retains a significant height of ground, supports a driveway, a building or a road, sits on poor or wet ground, or stands close to a boundary where failure would affect a neighbour. In those cases the wall should be designed by a structural engineer, and we build to that design. We will tell you at the site visit if your wall needs one.
Do you do the excavation as well?
Yes. We carry out the excavation ourselves with our own machinery, from 2-tonne mini diggers for narrow garden access to our 14-tonne excavator for larger walls and farm sites. That means the dig, the footing, the wall and the drainage are all carried out by one team, and we can arrange muck away as part of the job.

Ready to Level Your Sloping Ground?

Tell us about the slope and what you would like to use the ground for, and we will come and look at it with you. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the whole wall is built by our own team.
