Farm Tracks Built for Heavy Machinery and Every Season

Farm track construction is the building of a stone or hardcore route across farmland that can carry heavy machinery, livestock and delivery vehicles all year round. A well-built track is excavated to firm ground, separated from the soil beneath with a geotextile layer, built up in compacted graded stone and shaped to shed water.

A track takes punishment no domestic drive ever sees: loaded trailers, turning tractors and the wettest months of the Cornish year. The way it is drained matters as much as the stone that goes into it.

Luna Maintenance Ltd builds and rebuilds farm tracks across West Cornwall as part of our wider agricultural groundworks work, often alongside the yards, buildings and gateways the track connects.

The Farm Track Work We Carry Out

New farm tracks

New routes between yards, fields, buildings and the road, set out to the line and gradient your machinery needs, and built up in layers on a separating membrane. On sloping ground we plan the line to keep gradients workable for loaded trailers.

Hardcore tracks for heavy machinery

Deeper hardcore construction where the track carries the heaviest traffic, such as feed and milk lorries, loaded silage trailers and machinery going to and from the yard.

Track repair and resurfacing

Potholed, rutted and washed-out tracks rebuilt: the failed sections dug out, the base made good, the drainage put right and a fresh running surface laid.

Track drainage

Camber or crossfall to shed water, cross drains to take it off the track before it builds up, and side ditches or soakaways to carry it away. Where springs or wet ground cross the route, land drains go in beneath the track bed.

Gateways and field entrances

A firm stone surface at gateways and entrances, where stock and machinery churn the ground hardest, so the busiest few metres of the farm stay firm and clean through the winter.

Tracks to yards, buildings and arenas

Track work joined to the rest of the farm, from the apron of a new building to a farm concrete yard or the access to a horse arena, so the whole route works as one.

Our Farm Track Work

Our farm track work includes a new stone track laid between fields, built up in compacted layers and shaped to shed water, alongside the yards, building bases and arena drainage we build on farms across West Cornwall. Every photograph here is our own work.

What a Well-Built Farm Track Gives You

Access in every seasonA drained, compacted track stays firm through a wet winter, so feed, milk, stock and machinery keep moving when the fields are under water.

Less wear on machinery and stockAn even running surface means fewer jolts for tractors and trailers, less strain on tyres, and safer footing for cattle and sheep moving along it between fields and the yard.

A track that lastsBuilt on a separating layer and drained from the start, the stone stays in the track rather than sinking into the soil, so it holds its shape for many seasons.

Cleaner yards and roadsA firm track carries less mud into the yard and onto the lane, keeping the farm tidier and the road safer for everyone using it.

How We Build Your Farm Track

1

Walk the route with us.

We visit free of charge and walk the line of the track with you, looking at the ground, the gradient, the gateways and where the water runs.

2

Agree the plan in writing.

Your written quote sets out the route, the build-up, the drainage and the finish, and we talk through whether prior approval applies.

3

Strip and excavate.

We strip the topsoil and dig the track bed down to firm ground, removing soft spots instead of building over them.

4

Build up the track.

The membrane goes down and graded stone is spread and compacted in layers, shaped to its camber with cross drains set in.

5

Finish and hand over.

The running surface is laid, the ditches and outfalls checked, and we walk the finished track with you.

Why Farms Choose Luna Maintenance for Track Construction

Where a farm track meets the public road, the water it sheds becomes a legal question. Under section 163 of the Highways Act 1980, the highway authority can require the occupier of land next to a road to stop surface water flowing from it onto the highway. We design the camber, the cross drains and the track's junction with the road so the water goes to a ditch or soakaway instead.

Built by a groundworks contractor. Track construction is drainage, sub-base and heavy loads, the core of what we do.

The fleet for the job. Our own 14-tonne excavator and the Valtra tractor and dump trailer are ready the moment your track is.

We know Cornish ground. Granite, killas, springs and the steep valley sides of West Cornwall each need a different approach.

Your Contractor: Ross Kitto

Ross Kitto leads our farm track construction work. He brings 29 years in the trade and formed Luna Maintenance Ltd in 2023, and today he heads a close team of five working from Hayle. Tracks, yards and building bases are part of the everyday farm work Ross and the team carry out across West Cornwall.

Ross and the team are CPCS-carded on the plant and fully insured.

“We look at every detail of a track, from the line and the drainage down to the smallest gateway, and we deliver on every one,”

says Ross Kitto, director of Luna Maintenance Ltd.

What Your Farm Track Quote Covers

A track is priced from the route, not the map, so every quote starts with a walk along the line. Your written quote sets out:

the length and width of the track, and the depth of the dig
the ground we expect to find, and how soft spots are handled
the membrane and the stone build-up for the traffic it will carry
the camber, cross drains, ditches and outfalls
gateways, junctions with the road and any links to yards or buildings
spoil handling, and whether muck away is arranged as part of the job
the conditions that would change the price, such as rock, springs or wet ground

Anything that changes once the ground is open is agreed with you in writing first.

Farm Track Questions

How do you build a farm track?
We strip the topsoil along the route and excavate down to firm ground, removing any soft spots. A geotextile membrane goes down to separate the stone from the soil, then graded hardcore is laid and compacted in layers to the depth the traffic needs. The track is shaped with a camber or crossfall, cross drains are set in, and a finer running surface finishes it.
What stone goes into a farm track?
Most farm tracks are built from graded hardcore or crushed stone laid over a separating layer, with larger material in the lower layers for strength and finer material on top for a smooth running surface. The right mix depends on the traffic, the ground and what can be sourced locally. We agree the build-up with you at the site visit and set it out in your written quote.
How do you stop a track washing out?
By getting the water off it before it does any damage. The track is shaped with a camber or crossfall so rain runs to the edges, cross drains take water off at intervals on slopes, and side ditches or soakaways carry it away. A track that sheds its water stays firm, keeps its stone and needs far less repair after a wet winter.
Do I need planning permission for a farm track?
Often not full planning permission. Under the General Permitted Development Order 2015, Schedule 2 Part 6, many farm tracks on units of 5 hectares or more are permitted development, but you must ask the council whether its prior approval is needed for the siting and means of construction. Smaller holdings and protected locations work to different rules, so always check with Cornwall Council first.
Can you repair or resurface an existing track?
Yes. We dig out the failed sections, rebuild the base where it has sunk or broken up, put the drainage right and lay a fresh running surface. Where the track has failed because water is running down it, we deal with the cause as well as the potholes, so the repair holds. At the site visit we will tell you whether a repair or a full rebuild is the better option.
How wide should a farm track be?
Wide enough for the largest machinery that will use it, with room at the edges so wheels do not run on the shoulders and break them down. Tracks used by lorries or wide implements need more width, and longer tracks may need passing places and wider bends. We set the width with you at the site visit, based on the traffic and the ground.
