Tarmac gives your home a hard-wearing, practical surface for the drive, the parking area or a long private lane. We dig out, build and compact the sub-base, set the falls and the edging, then lay and roll the tarmac to a dense, clean finish that handles everyday traffic with ease.

Tarmac Driveways Built on a Base We Prepare Ourselves

A tarmac driveway is a surface of asphalt, a blend of graded stone bound with bitumen, laid hot over a compacted sub-base and rolled to a dense, smooth finish. The material laid today is usually asphalt or bitumen macadam, though almost everyone still calls it tarmac.

It is a practical choice for homes with a long drive, room for several vehicles or heavier traffic such as vans and trailers. A well-laid tarmac surface is firm, quiet underfoot and easy to keep clean.

As tarmac contractors, Luna Maintenance Ltd lays tarmac driveways, parking areas and private lanes across West Cornwall. We build the base ourselves, on our own machinery, because the strength of a tarmac drive comes from what sits beneath it.

The Tarmac Work We Carry Out

New tarmac driveways

The complete construction: excavation to depth, a compacted stone sub-base, edging and drainage, then the tarmac laid and rolled.

Driveway replacement

An old or failing drive broken out and removed, with muck away arranged as part of the job, before a new base and surface go down.

Laying over existing tarmac

Where your existing tarmac is sound and suitable, a new surface can be laid over it. We check the condition and the levels at the site visit before recommending it.

Parking areas and turning spaces

Extra parking, turning heads and hardstanding beside the home, laid to the same standard as the drive itself.

Long private drives and lanes

Rural drives and lanes leading to homes and farmhouses, where tarmac gives a firm, even surface over a long distance.

Edging and drainage

Edging that holds the tarmac in place and gives a clean line, with falls, channel drains and soakaways set so water leaves the surface. See our drainage service for soakaways.

Before the tarmac goes down, every base is dug, compacted and checked for level, with our whacker plate and machinery doing the work beneath the surface.

Our Tarmac and Driveway Work

Our driveway work includes long drives rolled and compacted on farm lanes, and new bases dug and compacted for resin and tarmac surfaces across West Cornwall. Every photograph on this site is our own team on our own work.

What a Tarmac Driveway Gives You

A surface that takes daily wearTarmac on a well-compacted base copes with cars, vans and heavier vehicles turning and parking every day.

A practical choice for larger areasLong drives, wide parking areas and private lanes suit tarmac, which is laid continuously across a large area in one operation.

Water managed from day oneThe falls, channels and soakaways are set before the tarmac goes down, so rain runs off the surface and away from the house.

A clean, uniform finishA dense, even black surface with crisp edging gives the front of the property a neat, finished look.

How a Tarmac Driveway Is Laid, Step by Step

Every tarmac driveway we lay follows five steps:

1

Get in touch.

Call 07460 077745 or send the form with an outline of the drive, parking area or lane.

2

Free site visit.

We look at the existing surface, the levels, the drainage and the access, and talk through whether a new base or an overlay suits.

3

Written quote.

The base, the surface, the drainage and the price, set out in writing before anything starts.

4

Excavation and sub-base.

The old surface is broken out where needed, then the ground is dug to depth, edged, drained and compacted.

5

Lay, roll and hand over.

The tarmac is laid hot, rolled to a dense finish, and we walk the new drive with you before we leave.

Why Choose Luna Maintenance for Your Tarmac Driveway

Tarmac is an impermeable surface, so where the water goes matters. Under section 163 of the Highways Act 1980, the highway authority can require a property owner to stop surface water flowing from their land onto the road. On a drive that falls towards the street, that means a channel drain or soakaway built in from the start.

The base is ours. Our own excavator, minis, dumper and whacker plate dig out and compact every base.

Experience across every surface. Tarmac, resin, concrete and gravel, so we recommend tarmac only where it suits your home.

Built around the drainage. Falls, channels and soakaways are planned before the surface is laid.

Accredited and insured. CHAS accredited, a Constructionline Gold member and fully insured.

What Your Tarmac Driveway Quote Covers

Every tarmac driveway is priced after a free site visit, because the ground and the area shape the work. Your written quote sets out:

the area to be surfaced, and whether it is a new drive or an overlay
breaking out the old surface, with muck away arranged as part of the job
excavation depth and the sub-base for your ground
edging, falls and drainage, including any channel drain or soakaway
access for our machinery and anything about the site that affects the work

If something changes once the old surface is lifted, we talk it through with you before carrying on.

Tarmac Driveway Questions

How long before I can drive on new tarmac?
New tarmac needs time to cool and harden before it takes the weight of a car. How long depends on the weather, the temperature and the thickness of the surface, and fresh tarmac stays softer in warm, sunny conditions. We tell you when your drive is ready on the day it is laid, and while the surface is new, avoid turning the wheels on the spot.
Is a tarmac driveway allowed without planning permission?
In England, a new or replacement front driveway over 5 square metres needs planning permission unless it is permeable or the water drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within your property. Tarmac is impermeable, so a front drive is usually laid with falls to a border or a soakaway to meet the rule. Check with Cornwall Council if your home is listed.
How should a tarmac driveway drain?
A tarmac driveway should fall gently away from the house so water runs off the surface. Where it falls towards the house or the road, a channel drain across the drive collects the water and carries it to a soakaway or border. The falls and drainage are set in the base before the tarmac is laid, so the finished surface sheds water cleanly.
Tarmac or resin?
Tarmac is dense, hard-wearing and well suited to long drives, larger parking areas and heavier vehicles. Resin bound gives a smooth, decorative finish in a choice of stone blends and is porous, so water drains through it. Both need a sound base. The right choice depends on the size of the drive, how you use it and the look you want.
What affects tarmac driveway cost?
The main factors are the area, whether a full new base is needed or the existing tarmac can be overlaid, breaking out an old surface, the depth of excavation and sub-base, the edging and drainage, and access for machinery. Every tarmac driveway is priced individually after a free site visit, with a written quote before any work starts.
Can you lay over my existing tarmac?
Yes, where the existing tarmac is sound and suitable. That means a stable surface without deep cracking, sinking or breaking up, and levels that still drain away from the house. We check the condition at the site visit. Where it is suitable, an overlay avoids a full new base; where it is not, we recommend digging out and starting again.
