Machine Tree Removal and Clearance, From the First Cut to Clear Ground

Tree removal is the felling and clearing of unwanted trees, including the stump and roots where the ground is going to be reused, so that land can be built on, farmed or brought back into use.

Done by machine, it is a controlled, efficient way to clear a site. Our 14-tonne excavator carries a tree shear that grips a stem, cuts it and places it on the ground, so timber is handled by the machine rather than by hand, and the same excavator then lifts the stumps and roots.

Luna Maintenance Ltd carries out tree removal and land clearance across West Cornwall for landowners, farms, builders and homeowners. We clear the ground with our own machinery, handle the waste, and leave the site ready for the next stage of your project.

The Tree Removal and Clearance Work We Carry Out

Machine tree felling

Trees taken down with the tree shear on our 14-tonne excavator, cut in sections where space is tight and laid down under control, with the chainsaw used for trimming and finishing.

Stump and root removal

Where the ground is going to be built on, farmed or landscaped, the excavator lifts the stumps and the main roots out, and the holes are backfilled and levelled.

Land and site clearance

Overgrown plots, neglected fields and building sites cleared of trees, scrub and rubbish. The flail attachment on our diggers cuts brambles and rough growth down, and the excavator clears what is left. Clearance ahead of a build runs straight into our groundworks.

Hedge and scrub clearance

Overgrown hedges and scrub removed to open up a field, a gateway or a new track, timed around the nesting season.

Storm-damage clearance

Trees brought down across tracks, yards, lanes and gardens after a storm, cut up, lifted clear and dealt with, so access is restored and the ground is made safe.

Waste and timber handling

Brash chipped on site, timber stacked for you to keep, or removal arranged as part of the job. If you would rather do the chipping yourself, our chipper hire is available too.

Our Tree Removal and Clearance Work

Our recent clearance work includes tree removal with the 14-tonne excavator and tree shear, and clearing storm-damaged trees after winter gales. Each job was carried out by our own team on our own machinery. You can see more of it on our work page.

What Machine Clearance Gives You

Trees cleared with controlThe tree shear holds each stem as it is cut and places it on the ground, so timber comes down where we choose, even on a tight site.

Ground that is genuinely clearWith stumps and roots lifted rather than left behind, the land is ready to dig, build on, fence or farm without another round of clearing.

Waste that is dealt withBrash is chipped, timber is stacked and anything that needs to leave the site is arranged within the same job, so you are not left with a pile to deal with.

One team for the whole clearanceExcavator, tree shear, flail, dumper and tractor with dump trailer are all ours, so felling, clearing and moving material happen in one continuous job.

How a Tree Removal Job Works

1

Get in touch.

Call 07460 077745 or send the form with photos of the trees or the ground you want cleared and a note of the access.

2

Free site visit.

We walk the site with you, look at the trees, the access and anything nearby to protect, and talk through what happens to the timber and brash.

3

Written quote.

The work, the specification and the price, set out in writing before anything starts, with any permissions or timing points flagged.

4

Fell and clear.

Trees are taken down with the tree shear, stumps and roots lifted where needed, and scrub cut back with the flail.

5

Tidy and hand over.

Brash chipped, timber stacked or removed, the ground levelled where agreed, and a walk-round with you before we leave.

Why Choose Luna Maintenance for Tree Removal

Timing matters in tree and hedge work. Clearance is best carried out outside the bird nesting season, which runs from March to August, because the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects active nests. We plan clearance work around that window wherever your project allows, and raise the timing with you at the site visit.

The right machine for the job. A 14-tonne excavator with a tree shear does work that would take far longer by hand, and the same machine lifts the stumps.

Chainsaw certified. The team holds chainsaw certificates for the cutting that the shear does not reach.

Accredited and insured. CHAS accredited, a Constructionline Gold member and fully insured, with our plant operation CPCS-carded.

Your Contractor: Ross Kitto

Ross Kitto leads Luna Maintenance and brings 29 years in the trade to every clearance job. He formed the company in 2023 and runs a close team of five who operate the machinery themselves.

The fleet behind this work is ours: the 14-tonne excavator with its rotating head and tree shear, the flail attachment, the dumper, and the Valtra tractor with its dump trailer for moving timber and spoil.

“We own every machine we bring to a clearance, so it is ready to go the moment your job is, and we leave the ground the way we would want our own,”

says Ross Kitto, director of Luna Maintenance Ltd.

What Your Tree Removal Quote Covers

We do not publish prices, because every clearance is different. The number and size of the trees, the access for the machines and what happens to the waste all shape the cost. The site visit and the written quote are both free.

Your quote sets out:

the trees, hedges or ground to be cleared
whether stumps and roots are to be lifted
what happens to the timber and brash, and any removal arranged
access for the excavator and any ground protection needed
levelling or backfilling once the ground is clear
any timing or permission points to check first

Everything we agree is in writing before work begins.

Tree Removal and Land Clearance Questions

How do you remove trees with an excavator?
We fit a tree shear to our 14-tonne excavator. The shear grips the stem, cuts it cleanly and holds it, so the operator can place the timber on the ground rather than letting it fall. Where space is tight, a tree can be taken down in sections. The same excavator then lifts the stump and main roots.
Is machine tree removal the same as tree surgery?
No. Our work is machine tree removal and land clearance: felling unwanted trees, lifting stumps and clearing ground with an excavator and tree shear, backed by a chainsaw-certified team. Climbing work, pruning and the care of trees you want to keep are a separate, specialist trade, and we will tell you plainly at the site visit if your job needs one.
Can you clear an overgrown plot or field?
Yes. We clear overgrown plots, neglected fields and building sites, taking out trees, scrub and brambles with the flail attachment and the excavator. Stumps and roots are lifted where the ground is going to be used, and the land is left ready for the next stage, whether that is groundworks, fencing or bringing a field back into use.
What happens to the waste?
Brash and smaller branches can be chipped on site, and the chippings left for you to use or taken away. Larger timber can be cut and stacked for you to keep, or removal arranged as part of the job. We agree what happens to every part of the waste at the site visit, so it is set out clearly in your quote.
Do I need permission to fell trees?
Sometimes. A tree may be protected by a preservation order or because it stands in a conservation area, and work on a protected tree has to go through Cornwall Council first. Clearance should also avoid the nesting season, when active nests are protected by law. Check with Cornwall Council before any felling, and we will raise anything we spot at the site visit.
Do you do storm-damage clearance?
Yes. After a storm we clear fallen and damaged trees from tracks, yards, lanes and gardens, using the tree shear to lift and cut timber that is under tension or tangled together. Access is restored, the timber is cut and stacked or removed, and the ground is left safe. Call 07460 077745 and tell us what has come down and where.

Ready to Clear Your Ground?

Tell us what needs to come down or be cleared and we will come and walk the site with you. The site visit and the written quote are free, and every machine on the job is our own.
