Concrete Bases and Slabs Built on Prepared Ground

Concrete contractors prepare the ground, build the formwork, and pour and finish the concrete bases and slabs that buildings, sheds, vehicles and machinery stand on.

The concrete is the part you see, but the result is decided before it arrives. A level, long-lasting slab depends on firm formation, a compacted sub-base, formwork set straight and to height, and a design matched to what the slab will carry, whether that is a garden shed or a loaded farm trailer.

Luna Maintenance Ltd carries out concrete works across West Cornwall for homeowners, builders and farms. We dig and prepare the ground with our own machinery, then pour and finish with our own team, so the base under the concrete and the concrete itself are the work of one contractor.

The Concrete Work We Carry Out

Concrete shed bases

A level, square base for a garden shed, summerhouse or outbuilding, set slightly above the surrounding ground so the timber stays dry and the doors hang true.

Garage and workshop floors

Slabs for garages, workshops and stores, designed for the weight of vehicles, benches and machinery, with the levels set to the door thresholds and the building that will stand on them.

Large slabs for farm and commercial buildings

Concrete pads for steel-frame structures and bases for silage sheds, poured to the footprint of the building. Where the pad is part of a new farm building, our agricultural buildings service takes it through to the erected frame, and yards and hardstanding are covered by farm concrete yards.

Bases for outbuildings, storage and equipment

Concrete bases for garden rooms, storage containers and equipment, sized to the item and the ground it sits on.

Breaking out and replacing old concrete

Cracked or sunken slabs come out with the breakers on our 14-tonne excavator, and we can arrange muck away as part of the job before the new base goes in.

The groundwork beneath the slab

Excavation, formation, sub-base and compaction, carried out by us with our own excavators, dumper and whacker plate. Where a slab forms part of a building's foundations, our groundworks team covers the footings as well.

Our Concrete Work

Our recent concrete work includes slab pours, concrete pads for steel-frame farm buildings and silage-shed bases, alongside shed bases for homeowners. Each one was poured on ground our own team prepared. You can see a selection of these jobs on our work page.

What a Well-Built Concrete Base Gives You

A building that sits squareA slab that is level from corner to corner means shed doors close, frames bolt down true and nothing has to be packed or shimmed to sit right.

A base that carries its loadThe thickness, the sub-base and the concrete are matched to what the slab will carry, from a garden shed to vehicles, machinery and stock.

Water kept clear of the buildingFalls and finished heights are set so rainwater runs away from the base and the walls standing on it, rather than sitting at the threshold.

Ready for the next stageStraight edges, accurate dimensions and the right finished height mean the building, the frame or the fit-out can follow on without any rework to the base.

How a Concrete Job Works

1

Get in touch.

Call 07460 077745 or send the form with what the slab is for, its rough size and a photo of the site.

2

Free site visit.

We look at the ground, the levels and the access for concrete deliveries, and talk through what the base needs to carry.

3

Written quote.

The work, the specification and the price, set out in writing before anything starts.

4

Dig and prepare the ground.

Any old concrete is broken out, the formation is dug, and the sub-base is laid and compacted. Formwork is set to line and level.

5

Pour, finish and hand over.

The concrete is poured, levelled and finished, then left to cure. We walk the base with you and explain when it is ready to build on.

Why Choose Luna Maintenance as Your Concrete Contractors

Where a slab carries a building, the design of what lies beneath it matters. Building Regulations Approved Document A covers structure, and under it the depth of a foundation depends on the bearing ground, any nearby trees and the load it carries. That is why we look at the ground first at every site visit, and why we design a base around what it will support.

Our own machinery from dig to pour. Excavator, dumper, whacker plate and breakers are all ours, so the ground preparation runs straight into the concrete work.

Farm-scale experience. We pour pads for steel-frame agricultural buildings and silage-shed bases, which is demanding work that carries over into every garage floor and shed base we lay.

Accredited for site work. CHAS accredited and a Constructionline Gold member, the standards builders and main contractors check before they bring a contractor on site.

Your Contractor: Ross Kitto

Ross Kitto leads Luna Maintenance and brings 29 years in the trade to every slab we pour. He formed the company in 2023 and leads a close team of five, CPCS-carded on the plant and confined space trained.

Every machine on your job belongs to us, from the 14-tonne excavator with its iDig machine control to the dumper and whacker plate that prepare the base.

“Once concrete is poured, the levels are set for good, so we look at every detail of the base, down to the smallest, before any concrete arrives,”

says Ross Kitto, director of Luna Maintenance Ltd.

What Your Concrete Quote Covers

We do not publish prices, because no two bases are the same. The size, what the slab will carry and the ground underneath set the cost, together with the access for concrete. The site visit and the written quote are both free.

Your quote sets out:

the size, the thickness and what the slab is designed to carry
the excavation, the formation and the sub-base
the formwork, the concrete and the finish
breaking out any old concrete, with muck away arranged as part of the job
the falls, the finished levels and any drainage
access, and anything on site that affects the work

Everything we agree is in writing before work starts.

Concrete Base and Slab Questions

How thick should a concrete shed base be?
It depends on what the base will carry and the ground under it. A light garden shed needs far less than a workshop holding a ride-on mower or machinery, and soft ground needs a deeper sub-base than firm ground. We design the thickness and build-up of your base at the site visit, once we know what it is for.
Do you lay concrete shed bases?
Yes. We lay shed bases for garden sheds, summerhouses and outbuildings across West Cornwall. Each base is dug out, laid on a compacted sub-base, set level and square to the size of the building, and finished slightly above the surrounding ground so the base stays dry and the building sits true.
Can you pour large slabs for workshops and farm buildings?
Yes. Alongside domestic bases, we pour large slabs for workshops, steel-frame farm buildings and silage sheds. Larger slabs are planned with the joints, falls and concrete deliveries worked out in advance, and the ground preparation is carried out with our own excavator and dumper, so the slab suits the building that will stand on it.
How are slabs designed for heavy loads?
A slab for heavy loads is designed to the load it will carry. We look at what will stand or move on it, such as vehicles, machinery or stock, and at the bearing ground beneath. The sub-base, the slab thickness and the concrete are then matched to that load, with joints placed to control movement across a large area.
How long before I can use a new slab?
Concrete strengthens steadily as it cures, so a new slab takes light use first and full loads later. How quickly it reaches each stage depends on the mix, the thickness and the weather, with cold conditions slowing the process. We tell you when your slab is ready to walk on, build on and load at handover.
Can you lay a base for a garage or workshop?
Yes. We lay garage and workshop bases to the dimensions on your drawings or the building supplier's base plan, with the levels set to the door openings. Where the building falls under Building Regulations, we work to the approved design and the foundation details it sets out, so the base is ready for the building to go up.

Ready to Talk Through Your Concrete Base?

Tell us what the slab is for and we will come and look at the ground with you. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the dig, the base and the pour are all carried out by our own team.
