Hayle is our base, and few towns in West Cornwall ask more of the ground beneath them. Along Hayle, Upton and Gwithian Towans the land is windblown sand: loose until it is compacted, and quick to drain. Around Copperhouse Pool and the margins of the Hayle Estuary it gives way to soft, wet silt, and parts of the old port can sit on made ground left by the town's industrial years.
Each calls for its own approach. Footings are designed to what the trial holes reveal, sub-bases on sand are compacted in layers, and near the water the drainage is resolved before any concrete is poured. The Port of Hayle, Harvey's Foundry included, forms part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, which can shape what is approved there.
Reaching the work is simple from here. The A30 carries our plant east towards Camborne and west to Penzance, the A3074 runs out through Lelant to St Ives, and the B3301 follows the dunes north to Gwithian.
