Concrete Farm Yards Built for Stock, Machinery and Weather

Farm yard concreting is the laying of reinforced or mass concrete across the working areas of a farm, from collecting and feed yards to building aprons and farm hardstanding for machinery. A concrete yard has to carry loaded tractors and stock every day, stand up to slurry and silage effluent, and drain to the right place.

The slab is only one part of it. What sits underneath, the excavation, the compacted sub-base and the falls, decides whether a yard stays level and dry or cracks, ponds and breaks up.

Luna Maintenance Ltd lays agricultural concrete across West Cornwall as part of our wider agricultural groundworks work, so the yard, the drainage and the buildings around it are planned together.

The Farm Concrete Work We Deliver

Collecting, feed and loafing yards

Yards where stock gather and feed, laid with a grip finish and falls that carry dirty water to a channel and on to the store.

Farm hardstanding for machinery and storage

Heavy-duty standing for tractors, trailers, implements, bales and stored materials, designed to the weight it will carry and the turning wheels that grind it. It can sit on its own or extend an existing yard.

Building aprons and access areas

Aprons at the doors of sheds and stores, where the heaviest daily wear on a farm happens, joined to the floor slab and the track beyond.

Clamp aprons and yard links

The concrete that joins a yard to a silage clamp or slurry store, laid to keep effluent in the right channel. The clamp and store themselves are covered on our silage clamps and slurry stores page.

Clean and dirty water separation

Falls, channels, kerbs and gullies that keep clean roof and yard water away from dirty areas, so only what needs storing reaches the store.

Break-out and replacement

Old, cracked or broken yards broken out with the excavator breakers and replaced from a new sub-base up, with the drainage redesigned while the ground is open. We can arrange muck away for the old concrete as part of the job.

Our Farm Concrete Work

Our farm concrete work includes building pads and silage-shed bases poured by our own team, alongside the tracks, arenas and building groundworks we deliver on farms across West Cornwall. Every job described here was carried out by our own team.

What a Well-Laid Farm Yard Gives You

A yard that stays level and soundA compacted sub-base and a slab designed to its load resist the cracking, rocking and breaking up that heavy daily traffic causes, year after year.

Safer footing for stock and staffA grooved or brushed finish gives cattle, sheep and people grip in the wet, cutting the risk of slips across the busiest parts of the farm.

Less dirty water to storeFalls and channels that keep clean water apart mean less rainwater reaches your slurry store, so its capacity is kept for the slurry it was built to hold and there is less to handle over the winter.

Easier to keep cleanA well-finished, well-drained yard scrapes and washes down quickly, with no hollows holding water or muck, so less of your day goes into keeping it tidy.

How We Lay Your Farm Yard

1

Walk the yard with us.

We visit free of charge to look at the ground, how stock and machinery use the space, and where the clean and dirty water should go.

2

Agree the plan in writing.

Your written quote sets out the area, the sub-base, the concrete, the finish, the falls and the drainage, with the specification and the price.

3

Excavate and drain.

We break out any old concrete, dig to formation and lay the channels and drainage runs while the ground is open.

4

Build the base and pour.

The sub-base is compacted in layers, the formwork set to the falls, and the concrete poured with joints placed to control cracking.

5

Finish and hand over.

The surface is grooved or brushed for grip, left to cure before use, and we walk the finished yard with you.

Why Farms Choose Luna Maintenance for Concrete Yards

The way a yard drains is regulated as well as practical. Under the Water Resources (Control of Pollution) (Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil) (England) Regulations 2010, slurry includes mixtures of livestock excreta with bedding, rainwater and washings from a yard used by livestock. Every area of dirty yard draining to your store adds to what the store must hold, so we set the falls to keep clean water out of it.

Groundworks first. The excavation, sub-base and drainage beneath the slab are our core work, and they decide how long the yard lasts.

Break-out to finish in one team. Our own 14-tonne excavator and breakers take out old concrete, and the same team lays the new yard.

What Your Farm Yard Quote Covers

A yard is priced from the site, because the ground, the area and the drainage all change from farm to farm. Your written quote sets out:

the area to be concreted and the depth of excavation
any old concrete to break out, and whether muck away is arranged as part of the job
the sub-base build-up and the concrete specified for the load
the falls, channels and drainage, and where clean and dirty water will go
the surface finish and the joint layout
the conditions that would change the price, such as soft ground, buried services or restricted access

Anything found once the ground is open is agreed with you in writing before it goes ahead.

Farm Concrete Yard Questions

What concrete is used for a farm yard?
Farm yard concrete is specified to the load it will carry and the conditions it will face, from loaded tractors and stock to the acids in slurry and silage effluent. A yard used by heavy machinery or livestock needs a stronger, more durable mix than a domestic slab. We set out the concrete specification for each area of your yard in the written quote after the site visit.
How thick should a farm yard slab be?
It depends on what the slab will carry and the ground beneath it. A yard used by stock and light vehicles needs less depth than one taking loaded trailers, telehandlers and lorries, and weaker ground needs a deeper sub-base. We design each slab to the load it will carry, decide on reinforcement where the design calls for it, and set the build-up out in your quote.
How do you stop a concrete yard getting slippery?
By giving the surface texture while the concrete is still workable. A brushed finish suits most yards and aprons, while a grooved finish gives stock a firmer grip on slopes and in the busiest areas. Good falls help as well, because a yard that drains quickly does not hold water or slurry on the surface. We agree the finish for each area at the site visit.
How does a farm yard drain?
A farm yard drains through falls built into the slab, which carry water to channels and gullies at the low points. Clean water from roofs and unused areas is kept apart from dirty water from stock areas, so clean water can go to a soakaway or watercourse while dirty water goes to the store. Planning the falls before the concrete goes down is what makes it work.
Can you lay farm hardstanding for machinery and storage?
Yes. We lay concrete farm hardstanding for parking tractors, trailers and implements, and for storing bales, materials and equipment. Each area is built on a compacted sub-base designed to the weight it will take, with a durable finish and falls so it drains clear. It can sit on its own or join a building, a yard or a farm track as part of a wider job.
Can you break out and replace an old yard?
Yes. Our 14-tonne excavator and breakers break out old, cracked or uneven concrete, and we can arrange muck away for the waste as part of the job. We then dig to firm ground, rebuild the sub-base, put the drainage right and pour a new yard with the falls and finish it needs. Replacing a yard is also the ideal time to separate clean and dirty water.
