Plant Hire From an Experienced West Cornwall Groundworks Contractor

Plant hire is the short-term hire of construction machinery, such as excavators, dumpers and tractors, either with a trained operator (operated hire) or for you to run yourself (self-drive hire). It puts the right machine on a farm, a building site or a garden for exactly as long as the work needs it, without the cost of owning one.

At Luna Maintenance Ltd, the machines on hire are the same machines our own team uses on arenas, farm tracks, foundations and driveways, so they are kept to a working contractor's standard.

Operated hire, often searched for as man and digger hire, puts one of our team at the controls. Self-drive suits a hirer with the experience to run the machine themselves.

Excavator, Wheeled Digger, Dumper and Tractor Hire

Orange 14 tonne excavator parked on site

14-tonne excavator hire

Our 360 excavator for the bigger digs: bulk excavation, foundations, drainage runs, farm tracks and site clearance. It carries a rotating head and iDig machine control, which helps the operator hold levels and depths accurately. If you are looking for 13 or 14 ton digger hire, this is the machine.

Wheeled digger hire

On tyres rather than tracks, it moves quickly between work areas and sits comfortably on yards and hardstanding, so it suits farm yards, larger gardens and building sites: trenching, loading trailers and general site work. Hire it with an operator, or ask us about self-drive.

Our machines work on our own projects as well as on hire: clearing storm-damaged trees with the excavator and tree shear, digging arena drainage, laying farm tracks and preparing resin driveway bases. Every photograph here shows our own plant.

How Plant Hire Works, Step by Step

Booking a machine with us takes five simple steps:

1

Tell us about the job.

Call 07460 077745 or send the form with what you are doing, where the site is and when you need the machine.

2

Choose the machine.

We recommend the right machine and attachments for the work and the access, and confirm whether you want it operated or self-drive.

3

Confirm it in writing.

You receive a written quote setting out the machine, the hire period, delivery or collection and, for operated hire, the operator.

4

Collect or take delivery.

Collect on a suitable trailer, or we deliver the machine and set it down where the work is.

5

Finish and hand back.

When the work is done, bring the machine back, or we pick it up if we delivered it, and we talk through any further hire the job needs.

Why Choose Luna Maintenance for Plant Hire

Under regulation 8 of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, every contractor appointed to a project must have the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out the work safely. When plant and an operator come onto your site, that is the standard they answer to.

Independently accredited. CHAS accredited as an SSIP Contractor (CDM), membership 179407, and a Constructionline Gold member, registration 1430139.

A groundworks contractor's fleet. The machines on hire are the ones that build our arenas, farm tracks and driveways.

Direct contact with the owner. You deal with Ross and the team who own the plant, from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, and every hire is fully insured.

Your Contractor: Ross Kitto

Luna Maintenance is led by director Ross Kitto, who brings 29 years in the trade to every hire and every job. Ross formed the company in 2023, and today a close team of five runs the fleet, from the 14-tonne excavator down to the 2-tonne minis.

The team's tickets match the work the plant does: CPCS-carded plant operation, confined space training and chainsaw certification.

“Every machine we hire out is one we own and work ourselves, and each one is ready to go the moment your project is,”

says Ross Kitto, director of Luna Maintenance Ltd.

What Your Plant Hire Quote Covers

We do not publish hire rates, because the price depends on the machine, the period and how it reaches you. Every hire is quoted in writing, setting out:

the machine and any attachments, such as a breaker, tree shear or whacker plate
operated or self-drive, and the operator where you need one
the hire period, from a single day to a longer stretch
delivery to site, or collection on your own suitable trailer
anything about the site that affects the hire, such as access or ground conditions

Tell us about the job and we will match the machine to it before you commit.

Plant Hire Questions We Are Asked Most

Do you offer operated or self-drive plant hire?
Yes, both. With operated hire, one of our CPCS-carded team runs the machine for you, which suits jobs where you want the work carried out as well as the plant supplied. Self-drive hire suits hirers with the experience, and any cards their site requires, to run the machine themselves. Tell us about the job and we will advise which fits.
What machines do you hire out?
Our fleet includes a 14-tonne excavator with a rotating head and iDig machine control, a wheeled digger, two 2-tonne mini diggers, a 1-tonne dumper and a Valtra 250hp tractor with a dump trailer. Attachments include a tree shear, breakers, a whacker plate, a flail attachment and a post hole borer, so each machine can be set up for the work in hand.
Do you hire by the day or the week?
Hire can be arranged by the day or for longer periods, depending on how long your job needs the machine. We do not publish rates, because the machine, the attachments, the hire period and delivery all shape the price. Tell us what you are doing and for how long, and you will receive a written quote before anything is booked.
Can you deliver the machine or can I collect it?
Either. If you have a suitable trailer and a towing vehicle rated for the machine, you can collect it from us. If not, we deliver it to your site and set it down where the work is. Delivery or collection is set out in your written quote, so you know exactly how the machine reaches you before the hire starts.
Are your operators trained?
Yes. Our plant operation is CPCS-carded, the recognised card scheme for plant operators on UK construction sites, and the team also holds confined space and chainsaw tickets. Luna Maintenance Ltd is CHAS accredited, a Constructionline Gold member and fully insured, so operated hire comes from an accredited contractor whose operators run these machines on their own jobs.
Can an excavator clear trees?
Yes, with the right attachment. Our 14-tonne excavator carries a tree shear, which grips and cuts the trunk and lifts the timber clear, so trees and scrub can be cleared with control. It suits storm damage, overgrown plots and clearance ahead of groundworks. If you would rather have the whole clearance handled for you, our team can take it on as a complete job.
