Stock Fencing and Post and Rail Built for Working Land

Stock fencing is woven wire fencing strained tight between timber posts, used to keep sheep, cattle and other livestock in their fields and off the lanes.

Post and rail is its equestrian counterpart: timber rails fixed to sturdy posts, giving horses a fence they can clearly see and that will not snag a hoof. Both stand or fall on their posts. A fence line is only as strong as the posts holding it, and on Cornish ground that often means getting a post into rock.

Luna Maintenance Ltd installs stock fencing, post and rail and arena fencing for farms and equestrian yards across West Cornwall, along with garden and boundary fencing for homes. As fencing contractors with our own machinery, we clear the line, bore or break out the post holes and set every post ourselves.

The Fencing Work We Carry Out

Stock fencing for farms

Woven wire stock fencing on timber posts for field boundaries, new enclosures and replacement runs, with strainer posts at the corners and ends so the wire stays tight across the whole length.

Post and rail fencing for paddocks

Timber post and rail fencing for horse paddocks and turnout, built with posts set firm and rails fixed on the field side, so the line is safe and clearly visible to horses.

Arena fencing

Timber fencing around ménages and riding arenas, set out to the arena edge and built to suit the surface and the drainage beneath it. Where we are building the arena too, the fencing follows straight on from our horse arena construction.

Agricultural fencing alongside farm groundworks

Fencing around new tracks, yards and buildings, put up as part of the wider job so the farm is stock-proof again as soon as the groundwork is done. See our agricultural groundworks.

Garden and boundary fencing

Fencing for homes and gardens, from boundary lines to fencing alongside patios and drives, chosen with you at the site visit.

Clearing the line first

Overgrown hedges, scrub and old fencing cleared before the new line goes in, using our excavators and flail attachment. Brash can be chipped on site, and if you would rather do it yourself, our chipper hire is available.

Our Fencing Work

Our recent fencing includes timber arena fencing on our horse arena work, set alongside the drainage channels and stone bases that went in beneath them. Every fence was put up by our own team with our own machinery. See more of our farm and equestrian jobs on our work page.

Stock stays where you put itTight wire, firm strainers and posts at the right spacing keep sheep and cattle in their fields and off the road.

Posts that stay uprightHoles bored or broken out to depth, even through rock, give every post a firm hold, so the line does not lean or loosen after a wet winter.

A fence that suits horsesPost and rail and arena fencing built with horses in mind, clearly visible and free of anything that could catch a leg or a rug.

One contractor for the whole jobWhen the fence is part of an arena, a track or a yard, the same team builds both, so the fence line and the groundwork are planned together and finished together.

Why Choose Luna Maintenance as Your Fencing Contractors

Arena fencing is often part of the planning picture. A ménage on land not already in equestrian use usually needs planning permission, and councils commonly attach conditions to the surface, the drainage, the fencing and the lighting. When we build arena fencing, we work to any conditions on your permission, so the finished arena matches what was approved.

Farm and equestrian specialists. Arenas, tracks, yards and farm buildings are our core work, and fencing is the natural finish to all of them.

The machinery for hard ground. Our post hole borer and breakers get posts into Penwith granite and Lizard serpentine, where hand tools struggle.

Accredited and insured. CHAS accredited, a Constructionline Gold member and fully insured.

What Your Fencing Quote Covers

We do not publish prices, because every fence line is different. The length of the run, the type of fencing, the ground the posts go into and the access all shape the cost. The site visit and the written quote are both free.

Your quote sets out:

the length and line of the fence
the type of fencing and the materials
clearing the line and removing any old fencing
post holes, bored or broken out to suit the ground
corners, ends and any changes in level
access for machinery, and anything on site that affects the work

Everything we agree is in writing before work begins.

Fencing Questions

What fencing do you install?
We install any type of fencing. For farms that means stock fencing and field boundaries, and for equestrian yards post and rail fencing for paddocks and timber fencing around arenas. For homes we put up garden and boundary fencing. We are farm and equestrian specialists first, so we are well equipped for long runs, hard ground and fencing that has to cope with livestock.
Do you put up stock fencing for farms?
Yes. We put up stock fencing for field boundaries, new enclosures and replacement runs, using woven wire strained between timber posts, with strainer posts at corners and ends to keep the wire tight. We set out the line with you, clear it where needed and set the posts with our own machinery, and we can fit the work round your stock and the farming calendar.
Do you build post and rail fencing for paddocks?
Yes. We build timber post and rail fencing for paddocks, turnout areas and around stable yards. The posts are set firm in bored or broken-out holes, and the rails are fixed on the field side so horses lean against the posts rather than pushing rails off. It gives a strong, highly visible boundary that suits horses and looks smart on any equestrian property.
Can you fence a horse arena?
Yes. We fence ménages and riding arenas with timber fencing set out to the arena edge and planned around the surface and drainage beneath it. If we are building the arena as well, the fencing follows straight on from the groundworks, so the whole project is delivered by one team. Where your planning permission sets conditions on the fencing, we work to them.
How do you get posts into hard Cornish ground?
Hard ground is common across West Cornwall, from Penwith granite to Lizard serpentine. We use a post hole borer on our machinery to bore clean holes, and breakers on the excavator where we meet rock that will not bore. Every post can then be set to depth on ground where hand tools would struggle, so the line stays firm and upright.
Do I need planning permission for a fence?
Most fences can be put up without planning permission under permitted development rights, as long as they stay within the height limits, which are lower where a fence runs beside a road. Listed buildings, conservation areas and conditions on an existing permission, such as an arena approval, can change that. If you are unsure, check with Cornwall Council before work begins.
