Expert Groundworks Contractors in Penzance and Mount's Bay

Penzance is the working heart of Penwith, and its ground ranges from hard granite on the moors to soft, wet land beside the bay. Our groundworks in Penzance take in farm projects, drainage, driveways and plant hire across the town and the farmland behind it, matching the method and the machine to whatever the dig reveals.

Groundworks in Penzance, From Granite Upland to Bayside Marsh

Two kinds of ground meet in Penzance. Inland, past Heamoor and Madron, the land rises onto the granite of the Penwith moors, where bedrock and the weathered, gritty granite Cornish builders call growan sit close beneath the surface. Along the shore of Mount's Bay towards Long Rock and the Marazion Marsh, the ground is low, soft and often waterlogged.

Granite rewards preparation. Our 14-tonne excavator carries hydraulic breakers for rock, and footings are taken down to sound bearing ground rather than stopped at an awkward boulder. Low ground needs the opposite thinking: drainage designed first, sub-bases thick enough to spread the load, and surface water led somewhere it can legally go.

Between those extremes sit the terraces of Newlyn and Alverton, the newer estates at Heamoor and Gulval, and a ring of working farms around Madron, Ludgvan and Newmill.

From our Hayle base the A30 brings us past St Erth and Crowlas into Penzance at Long Rock. From the town, the A3071 heads west to St Just and the B3311 climbs north through Gulval towards St Ives.

Our Farm, Groundworks and Plant Hire Services in Penzance

Agricultural and Equestrian Groundworks

For the farms behind the town. Agricultural groundworks leads, with agricultural buildings, farm track construction, silage clamps and slurry stores, farm concrete yards and horse arena construction, each detailed in the next section.

Plant Hire

Plant for Penwith jobs. Builders and landowners take our plant hire operated or self-drive, from the excavator with its breakers to the tractor and dump trailer. Mini digger hire suits the terraced streets of Newlyn, and chipper hire handles hedge and woodland clearance.

Groundworks and Drainage

Ground preparation. Granite and wet land both start with groundworks and accurate setting out. Waterlogged plots get drainage, including soakaways and septic tanks, while concrete works supply bases and workshop slabs, and tree removal and land clearance deals with storm damage.

Driveways and Landscaping

Homes and gardens. Town frontages become driveways in concrete, resin or tarmac. Sloping plots above the bay call for retaining walls, with patios, hard landscaping and fencing to finish the garden.

Penzance Groundworks Questions

Do you work in Penzance?
Yes. Penzance and its surrounding parishes are a regular part of our work, including Newlyn, Heamoor, Gulval, Madron, Long Rock and the farms out towards Ludgvan and Newmill. We take on farm and equestrian projects, drainage, driveways and gardens, groundworks for builders, and plant hire for anyone who needs a machine in this part of Penwith.
How do you deal with granite and wet ground around Penzance?
Granite and growan near the surface are broken out with the excavator's breakers, and footings go down to sound bearing ground. On the soft, wet land towards Long Rock, drainage is designed first and sub-bases are thickened to spread the load. A trial dig at the site visit shows which approach your plot needs before anything is priced.
Do you take on farm work inland of Penzance?
Farm and equestrian work is our lead line, and the holdings around Madron, Gulval and Ludgvan are exactly the kind of farms we build for. That means concrete yards, cattle sheds and stores, silage clamps, slurry stores, tracks and arenas. We work 7am to 7pm, seven days, so the job can fit round milking and the season.
Is self-drive hire available in Penzance?
Yes. Our plant is available self-drive or with one of our CPCS-carded operators. Collection is on a suitable trailer, or we can bring the machine to your site in or around Penzance. Tell us what the job involves when you call, and we will match the machine and its attachments to the work.

Talk Through Your Penzance Project
