Expert Concrete Driveways in West Cornwall

A concrete driveway takes its strength from the ground beneath it. We break out the old drive, dig to firm ground, build and compact the sub-base, then pour a slab designed for the vehicles it will carry, with the joints and falls planned before the first load arrives.

Concrete Driveways Built From the Ground Up

A concrete driveway is a continuous slab of concrete laid over a compacted sub-base, designed to carry the weight of your vehicles and finished with a texture that gives tyres grip in the wet.

It is one of the hardest-wearing surfaces you can choose for a home. A slab is only as good as what sits under it: the depth of the dig, the sub-base, the joints that control movement and the falls that carry water away from the house.

Luna Maintenance Ltd builds concrete driveways from the first dig to the final joint. We excavate with our own machinery, lay and compact the base, then pour and finish the slab with our own team, so one contractor answers for every layer. If you are still weighing up surfaces, our driveways page compares concrete with resin, tarmac and gravel.

The Concrete Driveway Work We Carry Out

New concrete driveways

For new homes and new parking areas. We set out the shape you want, dig down to a firm formation and build the drive up in layers to its finished level, with the falls agreed before any concrete is ordered.

Replacing an old driveway with concrete

Tired tarmac, cracked concrete or loose stone comes out with the breakers on our 14-tonne excavator, and we can arrange muck away as part of the job. The ground underneath is checked before the new base goes in.

Extending a driveway or parking area

Room for a second car or a turning area, with the new section tied into the existing levels and a planned joint where old meets new, so the two parts move independently rather than cracking at the seam.

Edging and the slab perimeter

Edges restrain the sides of the slab and define the line of the drive against lawns, borders and paths. We set out the edge detail together with the falls so the finished drive reads as one clean shape.

Drainage built into the drive

A solid slab sheds every drop of rain that lands on it. We plan where that water goes, whether to a border, a soakaway or a channel at the garage door, and where the ground needs more, our drainage work is carried out in the same job.

Our Concrete and Driveway Work

Our concrete work runs from driveway slabs for homes to concrete pads and silage-shed bases on working farms. Every pour sits on a base our own team has dug, laid and compacted. You can see a selection of our recent jobs on our work page.

What a Well-Built Concrete Driveway Gives You

A drive that stays levelA sub-base laid and compacted in layers over firm ground stops the settlement that shows up as dips, ruts and rocking edges a few winters later.

Grip through a Cornish winterA textured finish gives tyres and feet traction on wet mornings and on sloping drives, which matters on the hillside plots common across the west of the county.

Rainwater that goes where it shouldThe falls and drainage are designed before the pour, so water runs away from your house and your garage rather than pooling at the door or running out into the road.

A surface that asks very little of youA finished concrete drive needs little more than a sweep and an occasional wash, with no loose stone to rake back.

How a Concrete Driveway Job Works

1

Get in touch.

Call 07460 077745 or send the form with a photo of your current drive and a rough idea of what you would like.

2

Free site visit.

We walk the drive with you, check the levels, the ground and the access for concrete deliveries, and look at where the rainwater will go.

3

Written quote.

The work, the specification and the price, set out in writing before anything starts.

4

Break out and build the base.

The old surface comes out, the formation is dug, and the sub-base is laid and compacted. Edges, joints and falls are set out ready for the pour.

5

Pour, finish and hand over.

The slab is poured, finished to the texture we agreed and left to cure. We walk the drive with you and explain when it is ready for feet, then for cars.

Why Choose Luna Maintenance for Your Concrete Driveway

A concrete drive is a planning decision as well as a building one. In England, a new or replacement front driveway over 5 square metres needs planning permission unless it is permeable or drains to a border or soakaway. Concrete is not permeable, so the falls and drainage we design are what keep your drive within that rule. Under the Highways Act 1980 section 163, the council can also require that water from a property is kept off the road.

Every stage on our own machinery. Breakers, excavator, dumper and whacker plate are all ours, so the break-out, the dig and the base run as one continuous job.

Concrete is core work for us. The same team pours concrete pads for farm buildings and bases for silage sheds, slabs that carry far heavier loads than a car.

The team that visits your home is the team that breaks out the old surface, lays the base and pours the slab, using machinery we own, from the 14-tonne excavator down to the 1-tonne dumper.

“A driveway is something you use every single day, so we look at every detail of it, down to the smallest, from the depth of the dig to the last joint,”

says Ross Kitto, director of Luna Maintenance Ltd.

What Your Concrete Driveway Quote Covers

We do not publish prices, because the cost of a concrete driveway is set by your site: the area, what has to come out, the ground underneath and the access for concrete deliveries. The site visit and the written quote are both free.

Your quote sets out:

the area, the levels and the falls
breaking out the existing surface, with muck away arranged as part of the job
the excavation and the sub-base build-up
the slab, the joints, the edging and the finish
any drainage the drive needs
access, and anything on site that affects the work

Everything we agree is in writing before work begins.

Concrete Driveway Questions

Is concrete a good choice for a driveway?
Concrete is one of the hardest-wearing driveway surfaces, well suited to heavier vehicles, sloping drives and homes that want a clean, low-upkeep finish. It needs a sound sub-base, movement joints and planned drainage, because a solid slab sheds all the rain that lands on it. We will tell you whether it suits your site at the free visit.
How long before I can drive on a new concrete driveway?
Concrete gains strength gradually as it cures, so a new drive takes foot traffic first, then cars, then anything heavier. The timing depends on the mix, the thickness of the slab and the weather while it cures, and cold conditions slow it down. We tell you when your drive is ready for each stage at handover.
What finishes can a concrete driveway have?
Common finishes include a brushed texture for grip, a smooth border that frames the edge of the drive, and decorative options such as exposed aggregate. The right choice depends on the slope, how the drive is used and the look of your home. We agree the finish with you at the site visit and set it out in your written quote.
How do you stop a concrete driveway cracking?
Concrete moves slightly as it dries and as temperatures change, so cracking is controlled by design. We build on a compacted sub-base over firm ground, design the slab to the load it will carry, and place joints so any movement happens along a straight, planned line rather than across the middle of the drive. Careful curing matters too.
Should I choose concrete or tarmac for my driveway?
Both are hard-wearing and both depend on a well-built sub-base. Concrete suits heavier loads and gives a pale, crisp finish with a long working life, while tarmac is flexible, darker and quicker to bring back into use. We lay both, so at the site visit we can tell you which suits your drive best.
Can you replace an old driveway with concrete?
Yes. We break out the existing surface with the breakers on our own excavator, whether it is tarmac, old concrete or loose stone, and we can arrange muck away as part of the job. Once the old drive is out we check the ground, deal with any soft spots and build a new sub-base before the concrete goes in.

Ready to Plan Your Concrete Driveway?

Tell us about the drive you have in mind and we will come and look at the ground with you. The site visit and the written quote are free, and every stage is carried out by our own team on our own machinery.
