Expert Driveways in West Cornwall, From the Base to the Finished Surface

Choosing a new driveway starts with the surface you want and ends with the ground beneath it. We help you compare resin, tarmac, concrete and gravel, then dig out, drain and build the base before your chosen surface goes down, so the finished drive looks its best and wears well.

Driveways Built From the Ground Up by West Cornwall Driveway Contractors

A driveway is a hard-wearing surface built to carry vehicles from the road to your home, made up of a compacted sub-base, edging, drainage and a finished surface such as resin, tarmac, concrete or gravel. The surface is what you see. The excavation and sub-base beneath it decide how well it wears.

That is why we treat every driveway as a groundworks job first. As driveway contractors with our own machinery, Luna Maintenance Ltd digs out, drains and builds the base itself, so the surface you choose sits on ground we have prepared and trust.

This page helps you choose between the surfaces. Each one has its own page with the detail, and the right choice for your home is something we talk through at a free site visit.

Driveway Surfaces Compared

Resin bound driveways

A smooth, seamless finish of natural stone bound in clear resin. It is porous, so water drains through it, and the stone blend can be chosen to suit your home. Laid by our Rhino resin trained team: see resin driveways.

Tarmac driveways

A dense, hard-wearing surface that handles daily traffic and heavier vehicles, and suits long drives, parking areas and private lanes. See tarmac driveways.

Concrete driveways

A strong, rigid surface for heavy use, laid with joints that control movement and a finish agreed at the site visit. See concrete driveways.

Gravel driveways

A natural, free-draining finish of decorative aggregate, laid over a compacted sub-base and held in place by firm edging. A gravel driveway suits rural homes and long drives, and it lets rainwater soak straight through.

Other surfaces, matched to the property

We also lay block paving where it suits a property, on the same compacted, well-drained base as every other surface. Ask about it at your site visit.

Whichever surface you choose, the work underneath is the same in principle: excavation to the right depth, a compacted sub-base, edging that holds the surface in place, and drainage that takes the water where it can legally go.

What a Well-Built Driveway Gives You

A drive that stays level and soundA sub-base dug and compacted to suit your ground keeps the surface free of dips, ruts and cracks as the years go by.

Water handled before it becomes a problemFalls, channels and soakaways are built in from the start, so rain drains away from the house and off the surface.

A finish that suits your homeResin, tarmac, concrete or gravel, chosen for the way your property looks and the way you use the drive.

One contractor from break-out to finishRemoving the old drive, building the new base and laying the surface are all carried out by our team, with muck away arranged as part of the job.

How a Driveway Project Runs, Step by Step

Every driveway we build follows five steps:

1

Get in touch.

Call 07460 077745 or send the form with an outline of the drive you have in mind.

2

Free site visit.

We look at the ground, the levels, the access and where the water goes, and talk you through the surfaces that would suit your home.

3

Written quote.

The surface, the base, the drainage and the price, set out in writing before anything starts.

4

Excavation and base.

The old surface is broken out where needed, then the ground is dug to depth, edged, drained and compacted.

5

Surface and handover.

Your chosen surface is laid, the site is left tidy, and we walk the finished drive with you before we leave.

Why Choose Luna Maintenance for Your Driveway

Every driveway has to deal with its own rainwater. Under section 163 of the Highways Act 1980, the highway authority can require a property owner to stop surface water flowing from their land onto the road, so a drive that falls towards the street needs drainage built in from the start.

The base is ours. Our own machinery digs out and compacts every base, so the surface is laid on ground we have prepared.

Trained for resin. Our team is Rhino resin trained for resin bound installation.

Experience across every surface. Resin, tarmac, concrete and gravel, so our recommendation is based on what suits your home.

Accredited and insured. CHAS accredited, a Constructionline Gold member and fully insured.

What Your Driveway Quote Covers

Every driveway is priced after a free site visit, because the ground and the surface you choose shape the work. Your written quote sets out:

the area and the surface, with the finish or stone blend agreed
breaking out and removing the old drive, with muck away arranged as part of the job
excavation depth and the sub-base for your ground
edging, falls and drainage, including any soakaway
access for our machinery and anything about the site that affects the work

For resin, our resin driveway cost guide explains each of these factors in more depth.

Driveway Questions

Which driveway surface is right for me?
It depends on how your home looks, how you use the drive and the ground beneath it. Resin bound gives a smooth, porous finish; tarmac is hard-wearing and suits long drives; concrete is strong and rigid under heavy use; gravel is natural and free-draining. We talk through each option at the free site visit and recommend the one that fits.
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
In England, a new or replacement front driveway over 5 square metres needs planning permission unless it is made of a permeable surface or the water drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within your property. A drive designed with a permeable surface or the right drainage meets that rule. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with Cornwall Council before work begins.
Do you lay gravel driveways?
Yes. We lay gravel and decorative aggregate driveways over a dug-out, compacted sub-base, with firm edging to hold the stone in place. Gravel is free-draining, so rainwater soaks straight through, and it suits rural homes and long drives. As with every surface, the base beneath it is what keeps a gravel drive firm and level.
Do you lay block paving?
Yes, where it suits the property. Block paving goes down on the same compacted, well-drained sub-base as every other surface we lay, with the edging and falls built in. If you are weighing it up against resin or tarmac, we are happy to talk through every option at your site visit.
What affects the cost of a driveway?
The main factors are the size of the drive, the surface you choose, how much excavation the ground needs, the depth of the sub-base, the edging and drainage, whether an old drive has to be broken out, and access for machinery. Every driveway is priced individually after a free site visit, with a written quote before any work starts.
How should a driveway drain?
A driveway should fall gently away from the house, so water runs off the surface and away from the walls. On impermeable surfaces such as tarmac or concrete, a channel drain or the right falls carries water to a soakaway, lawn or border. Permeable surfaces such as resin bound or gravel let water soak through to a free-draining base.

Ready to Plan Your New Driveway?

Tell us about the drive you have in mind and we will come and look at the ground with you, then help you choose the surface that suits your home. The site visit and the quote are both free.
