Resin Driveway Cost in Cornwall: What Sets the Price of Your Drive

What Does a Resin Driveway Cost?

Resin driveway cost is set by five things: the area to be covered, the condition of the surface already there, the base that has to be built or prepared, the edging and drainage around it, and the resin system and stone you choose. Access and the shape of the drive play a part too.

Of those, the base often makes the biggest difference. Where an existing tarmac or concrete drive is sound and suitable, a resin surface can often be laid over it. Where it is not, the old surface comes out and a new base goes in, which is a larger job.

That is why a resin driveway is quoted after a site visit, not from a price list. The visit settles what the ground needs, and the written quote sets it out.

What Drives the Cost of a Resin Driveway

The area. Resin and stone are mixed and laid by the square metre, so the size of the drive sets the quantity of material. Our recent work includes a 55 square metre resin-bound driveway transformation.

The existing surface. Sound, stable tarmac or concrete may only need cleaning and preparing. Cracked, sunken or patched surfaces have to be broken out first, and the spoil removed. We can arrange muck away as part of the job.

Edging. A resin surface needs a firm, defined edge to finish against, such as block, kerb or steel edging. Long boundaries, curves and borders all add to the edging needed.

Drainage. A front driveway in England over 5 square metres needs planning permission unless it is permeable or drains to a border or soakaway. Resin bound is permeable, but only when the base beneath it lets water through, so the base and drainage are designed together.

Access and shape. Narrow access, steep slopes and lots of corners slow the mixing and laying, and that is reflected in the quote.

The Base Underneath: New Base or Overlay

The base is often the largest variable in a resin driveway quote, and the part you never see once the job is done.

Laying over an existing surface. Where the existing tarmac or concrete is sound and suitable, resin bound can be laid directly on top after cleaning, repairs and priming. It avoids a full dig-out, but it only works if the surface beneath is stable, level and draining as it should. Any movement or cracking in the old surface will eventually show through the new one. We check this at the site visit before recommending it.

Building a new base. Where the old surface is failing, or there is no hard surface at all, the drive is excavated to depth, a compacted stone sub-base is laid to the right falls, and a stable binder layer goes on top to receive the resin. More work goes in, and the result is a drive built from the ground up.

Our resin driveways are laid by Rhino resin trained installers on a base we have prepared or checked ourselves.

Bound or Bonded, Size and Finish: The Choices That Change a Quote

Resin bound or resin bonded. They are different systems. Resin bound mixes the stone into the resin before it is trowelled flat, giving a smooth, permeable finish. Resin bonded scatters loose stone onto a resin coat, giving a textured finish that is not permeable. The choice changes the materials, the method and what the base must do, so it changes the quote.

The stone blend. Aggregates come in a wide range of colours, sizes and blends. The stone you choose affects both the material cost and how the finished drive looks against your home and its surroundings.

UV-stable resin. Resins differ in how well they resist sunlight. A UV-stable resin holds its colour where others can discolour over time, which matters on an open, south-facing Cornish drive.

The details. Borders, contrasting bands, drainage channels and matching paths all add to the specification. Agreeing them before work starts means the written quote reflects the drive you actually want.

When to Call a Resin Driveway Installer

Call when you have decided on resin and want to know whether your existing drive can take it, or when you are comparing quotes and want to understand what each one includes. A site visit settles the base, the edging and the drainage before anything is priced. Our resin driveway installation service covers the full job, from the dig-out or surface preparation to the finished resin, with a free written quote.

Resin Driveway Cost Questions

What affects the cost of a resin driveway?
The cost of a resin driveway is set by the area, the condition of the existing surface, the base that has to be prepared or built, the edging, the drainage, and the resin system and stone chosen. Access and the shape of the drive matter too. A site visit is the only way to see all of these together and quote accurately.
Does resin bound cost more than resin bonded?
They are priced differently because they are different systems. Resin bound mixes stone through the resin for a smooth, permeable surface. Resin bonded scatters stone onto a resin coat for a textured surface that is not permeable. Which costs more on your drive depends on the base, the area and the finish, and both are set out in a written quote.
Does laying over an old surface cost less than a new base?
It can, because it avoids breaking out and rebuilding the drive. It only works where the existing tarmac or concrete is sound, stable and suitable, though, because movement or cracks beneath will show through the resin. Where the old surface is failing, a new base is the right choice. We check which applies at the free site visit.
Does the size change the rate?
Size changes the total and can change the rate. Some costs, such as setting up, preparing the base and finishing the edges, are spread across the whole drive, so a larger, simple area often works out more efficiently per square metre. Small drives with many edges, curves or levels take more work for their size. Your written quote reflects your drive.
